Joseph Pilates (1883 - 1967)
German-born American Joseph Pilates became interested in movement and its connection to health as a young boy. He suffered from poor health as a child, and he vowed to overcome his ailments through movement.
Pilates spent many years studying the movement patterns of animals and people. He came to believe that our modern lifestyle, bad posture and inefficient breathing were at the root of poor health. He defines his methodology, originally known as “Contrology”, as a way to unify mind, body and spirit. To that end, there are six pilates principles:
Breath
Concentration
Centering
Control
Precision
Flow
